Taking Tea

I’ve been interested in tea very seriously for years. Ever since I started this blog, I’ve been meaning to do an informational tea post, but I’ve kept putting it off or for forgetting about it. Carolyn of F* Yeah Lolita’s recent post about exquisite teas got my blood pumping again, and, doki-doki-ing away, I didn’t have any choice but to write up my own article!

So, why drink tea? Of course it is ~so lolita~, but why? Well, if you consider its fabled health benefits, it may not be a surprise; while being incredibly beneficial to one’s heart and immune system, it is also said to be good for the nails and hair, while boosting the metabolism and fighting diabetes (both important when nomming away on cakes at a tea party!). Green tea especially also employs a unique combination of chemicals: EGCG, L-theanine, and caffeine. These chemicals combine in an interesting way- the caffeine affects your body in a similar way as it does in coffee or soda, but the L-theanine and EGCG put your brain into alpha, relaxed brain waves instead of beta brain waves (which is considered the unhealthy “fight-or-flight” reaction) as is usual with caffeine consumption. What this means is that your metabolism is boosted and you feel more alert, but the uncomfortable anxiousness and nervousness are assuaged. There is also much less caffeine in tea (around 15 – 60 mg) than in other caffeinated substances, with soda at 80 -140 mg and coffee at 60 – 200 mg. This is why people trying to wean off the substance are recommended to switch a few cups of coffee to a few cups of tea a day.

So, what different types of tea are there? Technically, the three main types are black, white, and green. These all come from the same plant (Camellia Sinensis) and use the leaves; however, the difference in them is the fermentation, which affects each type profoundly. Black tea, the most common, is fermented longest; it’s considered “fully-fermented,” though technically the term “fermentation” is a bit of a misnomer in and of itself, because the process we give this name to is actually just allowing the tea to oxidize during the drying process- black tea is allowed to dry longest, and thus loses a lot of properties that less-fermented green and white teas keep in tact. The next level of fermentation is green tea, which, as stated above, keeps chemicals such as EGCG that black tea looses. White tea is considered the most healthful and luxurious, as it undergoes much more careful handling and a shorter drying period, keeping the most chemicals and health benefits. White tea drying methods are also used in Silver Tips tea, which is usually the most expensive type: this tea uses only first-flush young leaves (the newest, youngest, most tender leaves from the first harvest of the season) – if you can get your hands on this I really recommend it! Beyond those, anything else is considered an “herbal” tea, or tisane (pronounced “tee-zahn”) – the only “true” teas are those using leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant.

Now you know what type of tea you want to go for. Your next question is, loose leaf or bag tea? There are pros and cons for each choice. For example, bag teas are cheaper and more convenient, but you have to be more careful – a lot of tea bags are mostly filings, which are very low-quality “fillers.” You have a much better chance of quality control if you go with loose leaf, as well as superior taste and more blending capabilities – obviously, I recommend loose leaf, but it’s a bit pricier (look to pay $3 – 15 per ounce, with 3 – 4 servings per ounce) and harder to get a hold of. Try your local health food store, or online – my personal favorite sites are Rishi Tea and DiviniTea. They’re also both Fair Trade, organic, and kosher, all of which are important to me personally. What that means is that the teas were produced by workers in fair, safe conditions without the use of harmful chemicals, using only the best ingredients – I recommend checking packages and looking for certification for all three when buying teas. For a loose leaf tea, you’ll need an infuser of some sort  – this can be an individual teacup, a whole teapot, or even a french press (my favorite is this one from Rishi Tea). You can even steep the leaves in a normal teapot, then strain it when you pour it into the individual cup. If you want more tips on the best way to brew Western tea, check out Victoria Suzanne’s post here.

I have a deep personal love of tea. I spent six month working in an organic hippie tearoom, and it was by far the best six months of my life. I learned so much more about tea than I ever thought was possible, and from this I learned more than I could have ever expected about myself, inner peace, and balance. There so are many reasons people drink tea- love of the taste, its possible health benefits, or for the pure aesthetic value of taking tea with friends. What’s your reason?

marginally related image c/o we heart it

Between redoing my room at my parents’ house, planningmy move back to school, and working for a kitchen appliance company that is expected to be fluent in interior design, I’ve been spending a lot of time lately thinking about decor. Today I was going through the newest issue of a design magazine we carry and was stunned by the trends I noticed – light, airy colors with Victorian detailing and scrollwork in the moldingwere greatly appreciated, but the thing that made me doki-doki most was the use of everyday items as focal points- things that may have been put there to grab attention but also look like they were just sort of put there, grew accustomed to their new homes, and never left.  I love this trend – it seems so natural &organic to me. It’s also a really easy way to transform a room – clear off a table and add a sweet, simple centerpiece and you can really transform a room.

I’ve put together a few ideas for simple, quick attention grabbers based on what I’ve been seeing in design magazines. I tried to base these around a sort of dreamy, fairytale-y, vintage-y aesthetic that I think my darling lolis would find inspiring. Hopefully these will help you all add a little more romance to your room!

  • Buy a few pretty, intricate photo frames. Instead of pictures, put a black and white print, a small mirror, or even a handmade silhouette!
  • Cake stands &tea trays: Use these to display little tchotkes, jewelry, or even as a perch for your picture frames.
  • A vintage tea set would look adorable as a focal point on top of a dresser, breakfast table, or vanity – bonus points on the latter if you use the sugarbowl &cream pitcher to hold your jewelry! Or even make-up – imagine an array of colored eyeliner pencils and mascaras sticking out of a little teapot.
  • Everyone knows a bouquet of flowers will do wonders for brightening and perfuming any room, but if you’re looking for a more natural, organic feel, try a bundle of herbs like lavender or mint instead.
  • If you DO want flowers, get a low, shallow bowl, fill it with water, &float some blossoms in it. Please note that flowers will die sooner in this method than a vase!
  • If you’d rather get some more lifetime out of your bouquet, get a pretty glass wine bottle, remove the label, and use it as a vase for a bouquet of long-stemmed wildflowers, like Queen Anne’s Lace of a branch of forsythia.
  • Buy (or convince someone to give you!) a bouquet of roses. Instead of throwing them out when they start getting brown, tie the stems together with a string and hang them upside down to dry. Gravity will keep them from getting wilted, so once they’re totally dry you can put them in the vessel of your choice or – as I prefer – just leave them hanging by a window or on the outside of your door.
  • Leave china teacups of potpourri around – customize the blend with hand-dried roses from above.
  • Fill small, decorative bowls with prettily-wrapped candy and leave it on your bedside table or the shelf of a bookcase.
  • Buy an empty glass lamp from your local craft store. Fill it with shells, buttons, fake flowers, or anything else that suits your fancy.
  • Use colored lightbulbs in a few lamps or sconces. I used to have amber ones in mine, and it gave my room a dreamy look like it was eternally sunset.
  • Fill your room with vintage clocks of all types. Watches hanging from a nail to the wall, alarm clocks on the bureau – to make it even more Wonderland, set them all to a different time.
  • If you have a dressform, dress it in that dream coordinate that you always want to wear but never have an excuse to.

Last Saturday, Victoria Suzanne &I met up with Crystal to traipse about the beautiful grounds of Wadsworth Manor in Middletown, CT and then warm up with lattes from Klekolo coffee shop.

The beginning of our journey!

At the entrance to the ground there was this adorable bridge, so we had to pause our expedition for a few photographs. We soon moved onwards, though, &after a bit of a hike through the woods, we came upon what must be a beautiful garden in the summertime, but at the moment was only a field of snow with a cute garden shed, with architecture mimicking the original structure’s.

  • Blouse &Purse: Innocent World
  • Socks &bow: BABY

Livejournal user Momoco, who is always a wonderful inspiration with her questions to the community, recently asked us a meme for 2009. The lovely Caro of F* Yeah Lolita filled one out herself, which inspired me to do the same!

2009 in Review

This year, I was lucky enough to get/make for myself:
My first brand purse, my first real lolita winter coat (which it technically still en route but the idea is still there), & most importantly, lots &lots of new friends (both lolita &non-). I also broadened my horizons a lot &found a lot of new ways to express myself through lolita.

Next year, I hope to have more of:
Indie &vintage pieces that can travel seamlessly between my normal wardrobe &my lolita one. Also, more lolita friends from my local area, even though I met so many this year!! I also want to continue to broaden my sartorial mind &find even more places to draw fashion inspiration from.

My favourite lolita memory of 2oo9 was:

San Francisco, &shopping in a brand store again!! &The lolita fashion show at CTcon was also wonderous. Dances of Vice, both Lolita Days, and any other day spent with my dearest frilly darlings are also high on the list! heartheartheart.

Happy Holidays!

Miss Lumpy wishes you all a happy whatever!

The Holidays are here! Technically, my holiday was yesterday, but I know that I’m the minority here – even in my own family! Since I’m going to be celebrating Christmas with my family, I decided to doctor up some recipes for the holiday. They’re really very simple &are made with things I had around the pantry (though I have a slightly odd assortment of ingredients between my mother &I), so I figured they may make excellent additions to a familial holiday celebration or winter lolita meetup.

Coconut White Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of white chocolate chips
  • about 3 cups of of whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon coconut extract

First, use a double-boiler to melt the chocolate chips. If you don’t have one, you can use a saucepan with simmering water and a glass or metal bowl on top of it. The bowl should be just a bit bigger than the saucepan, and the water should come to just below the bottom of the bowl (not touching it). Pour chips into the bowl  and stir constantly (use a potholder to hold the bowl steady!) Once they begin to melt, slowly add the milk, first by a few tablespoons at a time, then as it becomes more liquidy you can add it in larger amounts. Once fully melted, dump out the water (dry the pan well, as any water leftover could compromise the consistency) and transfer your chocolate mixture to the pan. Over medium heat, stir in the extracts and remaining milk until it reaches desired consistency. Serve warm in a porcelain teacup with whipped cream, preferably after an afternoon building snowmen or (in my case) driving through a blizzard!

Peppermint Cake Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix (I used Devil’s Food)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • Andes Mints, to garnish
  • Peppermint extract to taste (optional)

Preheat over to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine first three ingredients in a medium-sized mising bowl. With a wooden spoon, mix until well-combined (the dought shoul mostly stick togbether – don’t over-mix!), then use a tablespoon to shape into balls. Put on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and flatten slightly, so they make small, thick disks. Your yeild will depend on the size of the cookies- I got about a dozen and a half from 1.5″ diameter disks. As for the Andes mints, I used baking chips but if you can’t find those you can cut the little bar-shaped ones into small pieces and either sprinkle a few on top or just put a single piece, cut to the size of your cookie. Either way, push them into the cookie a little bit so they bake into it and don’t fall off when they’re done. Bake time varies greatly between ovens and cookie size, but I would give it between 7 – 15 minutes. Serve hot!! The chocolate is melty &the cookies are moist, but they’re still delicious cool too. This is a great recipe for last-minute parties, or for the not-so-seasoned baker to bring to a meetup, or to pull together quickly for snuggling with your sweetie &watching the snow fall with a mug of tea.

Whatever holiday you celebrate, I hope you have a great one, &I hope you guys try out these recipes! Maybe you can even start a new family tradition 🙂

(Southern Hemisphere- apologies for the completely winter-centric post!)

Beauty Tips from Miss Lumpy

image from weheartit.com

LJ user momoco did the lolita community a huge favor yesterday by asking it to compile its best beauty secrets. This treasure trove of information containing tips for skin, hair, and make-up prompted me to compile my own list of beauty tricks &treats.

  1. Healthy skin always starts from the inside. If your insides are unhealthy, your outsides will show it. An old standby is water: drink a lot, but not too much as over-hydration can be just as dangerous. I try to keep a glass or bottle next to me at all times, whether I’m in class, at work, or even in bed at night. Also, take vitamins. This is probably obvious – A, C, &E are particularly helpful for your skin. If you have dry skin, it may be because you’re not getting enough healthy fats – try eating more avocado or fish, or take fish oil supplements. Diet is incredibly important too- make sure you’re eating things that are good for you, that your body can easily process. Otherwise, all the icky that it can’t process will come out through your pores! Personally, I’m borderline-religious with my refusal to eat red meat, and I also avoid white meat and dairy like the plague. A balanced diet containing mostly whole grains and fresh produce, with a good amount of protein (serving size about the size of your fist, and get creative with tofu or nuts instead of just meat – did you know that humans are only supposed to eat half a pound of meat a week?!) and a small percentage of dairy and sweets works best for me.
  2. Chemicals, in my opinion, are muy mal. I try to avoid unnatural chemicals whenever possible. Sure, some are okay, but I don’t want to take chances with my body. I wash both my hair and face with baking soda and apple cider vinegar (more information on the “no-poo method” here), and supplement with oatmeal scrubs for my face/body and hot oil treatments for my hair as necessary.
  3. Go as organic as possible with your make-up – I know it can be pricey, but at least choose mineral over non-. Mineral make-up is usually rich in vitamins A, C, &E which are great for your skin, and is usually longer-lasting than most commercial make-up. Remember that your skin is porous; obviously, everyone talks about pores, but most people don’t realize that that means that it’s absorbing at least a percentage of everything you put on it, which includes your make-up &the chemicals in it.
  4. Ascertain which make-up colors most compliment your natural beauty so you don’t have to lather on more products to get the desires results. For example, I’ve found that brown or dusty rose eyeshadows bring out my hazel eyes, which means that more attention are drawn to them and I can go lighter on mascara or eyeliner. A quick google search will give you some suggestions, but a general rule is the color wheel – anything directly across it is its opposite and will make the color pop, like purple for green eyes. Go easy, though!
  5. Stay away from Proactiv!! I’ve never tried it myself so I admit I may be wrong/misinformed, but I’ve heard some terrible horror stories. It also goes against my “avoid as many chemicals as possible” rule, because it’s supposedly loaded with them. The way a healthy exfoliator works is it is composed of small circluar beads that gently brush away dead skin. An unhealthy exfoliator like (I’ve heard) apricot scrubs has triangular beads, the sharp corners of which rip off layers of dead skin &usually a few layers of healthy new skin as well. The way Proactiv and other chemical exfoliators work is they use harsh, caustic chemicals to literally create a small chemical burn all over your face &removes skin this way, usually penetrating multiple layers of healthy skin as well which leave your face exposed to the elements. I’ve also heard that it’s “addictive,” meaning your skin only looks nice until you go off it, then once you stop using it it’s even worse than when you started &it’s harder for your body to naturally balance itself. It removes but it doesn’t heal.

Specific products that I adore &find highly underrated:

  1. Baking soda is my number one favorite substance ever. A brief list of beauty uses is available here, but there are dozens of other uses both for your body &around the house. Sodium bicarbonate is pretty much fantastic &no one will ever convince me otherwise.
  2. Bronzer! Contrary to popular belief, bronzer is different from self-tanner: it’s not used to make your skin look darker (well, it can be, but shouldn’t be, as this looks unnatural) but to give your face and body a subtle, healthy glow. I used a powdered bronzer with two different shades that I blend together with a brush and then apply anywhere the sun would naturally kiss my face: cheekbones, bridge of the nose, jawline, &along the hairline. Make sure you blend, and only use a tiny bit – remember, you’re not trying to make yourself tan! This just adds a gentle, healthy, sun-kissed glow about you &can make you look more awake.
  3. Highlighting powder. Mine is a shimmery white and pink that I mix together with a brush and apply, much like my bronzer. The idea is that the light shades &subtle sparkle catch light and reflect it, so shadowed areas appear less sunken. I use this on my under eye circles, though you can use it anywhere that needs a little “lift,” such as along the laugh lines or under the bottom lip. Like I said, I apply a bit under my eyes &blend it down into my blush &bronzer – sometimes I put a bit of mineral foundation over it to cut down on shimmer &make it look more natural.
  4. Primers. These are mostly colorless creams that are applied under make-up and improve coverage, blendability, and longevity of your make-up. I recently tried BB cream, which worked amazingly as a foundation primer (I’ve ordered my own as a Christmas present!) – totally recommend it. I also have a small pot of Aromaleigh’s Eye and Lip Primer that I use on, well, my eyes and lips. It’s great for bright eyeshadow as it evens &lightens your natural lid shade. I also love it on my lips as a base for red or even alone with balm over it for the very en-vogue nude lip.
  5. I’m currently really into liquid liner – not a huge secret or anything, but I’ve always used pencil because of the nice smudge it gives &recently switched. It really gives much more freedom &lasts much longer than pencil, &it gives a more drastic, distinct line.

I’ve said in the past and I’ll say it again, I don’t really know too much about make-up, so all of this is based almost solely on my own experience &things I’ve heard from professionals I’ve worked with. It’s very possible that all of the above is just true for me &my body. If I’ve bashed a product or process that you like or am endorsing one that doesn’t work for you, please let me know in the comments! Everyone’s body is different, and some things will work &some things won’t. It’s important to experiment and hear different opinions so you can figure out what you best react to.

So, do you have any particular tips or tricks you’d like to share with the class?

As Complex as the Contents

A woman’s mind is as complex as the contents of her handbag; even when you get to the bottom of it, there is ALWAYS something to surprise you!

-Billy Connolly

Recently I had the joy of purchasing my first brand purse. To me, the Brand Purse was always some kind of status symbol – sure, you need the dress, you need the socks, you need the ________, but the purse has always seemed to a flippant little something extra that a lolita doesn’t actually require. A plain or non-loli purse will always be fine, as well as a brand tote, and I’m somehow exceptionally hard on… well, everything, but especially purses. They’re right up there with brand shoes – they’re going to get scuffed up and dirtied and knocked around, but dammit, they’re just so cute.

ooooh boy!!!!

Oh boy you guys...

So that’s why I bought this new purse from Innocent World. Isn’t it lovely (Come on now, I’m not hearing a resounding chorus of ooh’s and aah’s!)? I was slightly worried about the size – it’s definitely a pochette, and I’m used to lugging half my worldly possessions around in my purse – but I was please to know that, as is often the case with small purses, there is some form of black hole inside its main compartment that houses not only THREE POCKETS (I know!), but a multitude of other goodies. The fun part is, since it’s a rectangle, you have to sort of jigsaw your things in it like a puzzle – yeah, that’s the fun part for me. Hello, Gemini ascendant, is that you?!

The innards, splayed across a table -- eww...

So here’s everything that I fit in my purse with a bit of room to spare:

  1. Camera, in a Mother Garden case (technically, this is just the case, as I was using said camera. Clearly, as there is… a picture. Um, yeah.)
  2. BIG sunglasses
  3. Iiiii have no wallettt, I have no wallet, I keep my cards together with… well, a hair tie, actually. They conveniently fit perfectly in one of the inside pockets.
  4. Blistex. Shut up, it’s damn cold here!
  5. Lipgloss. Yes, I carry two lip coverings with me at all time. It used to be three. They serve very different purposes. Now stop laughing.
  6. Keys, with a plush elephant PEZ dispenser keychain. Gift from my boss – he also got Victoria Suzanne a hippo. It’s… a long, complicated story.
  7. Cell phone! No, it’s not very pretty. It goes through various stages of pretty- this is not its best look. Note, if you will, the thin line of pink along the back – that is duct tape holding in its battery. Yes, seriously.
  8. A pen. For jotting down URLs of interesting websites I happen upon and the numbers of cute suitors I meet while flitting about town.
  9. My new Tarot deck, modeled unknowingly by my darling Victoria Suzanne!

Also, this picture was conveniently shot at a Starbucks on our most recent date. Note the soy peppermint mocha and the soy caramel brulee latte – usually we prefer chai lattes, but it was too cold out not to be festive! As the picture states, they were indeed very yummy.

So, ladies, what’s in your purse?

Few of you know this, but lately, in addition to lolita I’ve been really interested in modern mainstream &high fashion. I’ve been watching the shows, reading the magazines, observing the trends every chance possible, &let me tell you I am loving it! This season is going to be amazing &I am adoring it. Part of my observing has been trying to see what current trends I can combine with lolita, &let me tell you, I’m brimming with ideas. Sure, the stiletto peep-toe booties I’ve been seeing around don’t exactly fit the bill, but let me show you some that do:

Fall Trends 1: copper eyeshadow &chignon by evil_neko featuring Charlotte Russe shoes

Fall Trends 1

Here I decided to combine two trends in one: copper eyeshadow and a low, tight chignon. While both have been increasingly popular in recent years, supposedly this season will be their heyday – personally  I totally approve, because both contribute to a very sophisticated overall look, in my opinion (my hair is too shrot now to partake in the chignon myself, but I’m fine with watching others do it!). To put these into lolita, I decided to go for a classic, steampunk-influenced look with Innocent World &steamy accessories, like boots &the necklace. Not sure if you can tell, but the socks are brown &white striped – it’s hard to see in the smaller picture. For the chignon, give yourself an extreme side-part near your ear, comb through with gel over your crown to keep it smooth&tight, &secure with a tight elastic. Style options are really quite versatile – rose corsages, hairclips, braids… it might even look cute peeking out under a half-bonnet.

Fall Trends 2: Red lips by evil_neko on Polyvore.com

Fall Trends 2

Another trend I’ve noticed, more this fall than so far this winter, is bright, fearless red lips. I personally love the timeless look of red lipstick, but I think it’s far too overpowering for me or, in my opinion, most forms of lolita (I have seen it done well, though, especially in gothic). Then  I started thinking, what about if it’s a Clara Bow? The Clara Bow was popular in the 20’s, when tube lipstick was a new-fangled invention that allowed the girls more freedom with its application. It is applied by paling out the lips with primer and/or foundation and redrawing them in smaller &fuller- a good tutorial is here for anyone interested. The reason I think this works well with lolita is that the smaller lip is less overbearing, but is still full &cutely pouty &suits the doll-like look of classic or maybe even sweet… but don’t get crazy. The Clara Bow can also be overpowering if it’s accentuated too much, so keep it simple!

Fall trends 3: monochrome with a pop of color by evil_neko on Polyvore.com

Fall trends 3

The last trend I want to address, &one of my personal favorites, plays with color palettes. Use a neutral like black, white, or gray, and pair it with a few pops of a bright color. I used black with pink for this example, but some others are brown with powder blue, grey with lavender, and white with sage green. Note that my examples are muted pastels, but you could potentially do something like red or hot pink if you have the right stuff. Caution – too bright colors can look kind of 80’s revival. ~Fashion~ (who?) says that in order for a color to be incorporated into an outfit, you should have three+ pieces of that color as well as your base, so a “pop” would be only one or two small pieces or accessories- a hairbow, socks, or purse, for example. This is, as I said, my favorite current fashion trend &totally defines my non-lolita style – I am SUCH a sucker for neutrals this season! Last year I avoided them whenever possible, but this year I am relishing them – right now I’m wearing solely black &grey as we (type?) speak &it is delicious!

You know I will never tell you to dress like the rest of the world, readers. I adore your individuality &support sartorial experimentation in all its forms, but I also think it’s important to look unexpected places for fashion inspiration, and you never know – that place could just be the latest issue of Vogue or Allure!

What are your favorite mainstream fashion trends right now? Do you incorporate them into lolita?

(also, apologies that I’ve been so sparse lately – I’ve had a lot of stuff on my plate, not least of which being my first legit University finals. Semester’s almost over, though, so soon I will be out of excuses &will go back to updating twice a week or so!)
